Commercial saddle-stitched conference publishing specifications
Event booklets are handled constantly by delegates navigating conference schedules and exhibition floor plans. Flimsy paper tears at the staples, and uncalibrated digital print produces banded gradients and illegible agenda font sizes.
Binding Mechanism & Finishing
- Dual Stainless Wire Saddle-Stitching: Heavy-gauge galvanized steel wire inserted along the spine fold and cinched flat on the inner center spread. Resists pull-apart failure under continuous thumbing.
- Automated Creep (Shingling) Compensation: As page counts increase, inner signatures push outward. Pre-press imposition adjusts inner margins outward by calculated fractions of a millimeter to ensure identical margins after face trimming.
- 3-Knife Precision Face Trimming: High-speed hydraulic trimming on top, bottom, and leading edge ensures flush, razor-straight page boundaries.
Paper Selection & Visual Legibility
- 157gsm Silk Coated Art Paper: Delivers high contrast for schedule tables and speaker portraits while subduing surface glare under convention hall lighting. Caliper 0.15 mm.
- Optional Heavyweight Cover (250gsm): Adds durability and tactile prestige for multi-day conventions. Compatible with matte lamination or spot UV highlights.
- Digital & Offset Production: Short runs printed on digital production presses with micro-toner clarity; large volume runs produced via high-precision 4-color offset lithography.
Preflight Artwork Preparation & Frequently Asked Questions
Follow these technical guidelines to submit clean PDF files for saddle-stitched booklets.
Booklet Preflight File Requirements
- Page Count: Ensure your document total page count is divisible by 4 (including front cover, inside covers, and back cover).
- Single-Page PDF Order: Export PDF as individual sequential pages in numerical order (Page 1 to N), NOT as printer spreads. Our imposition engine places spreads.
- Bleed & Trim: Include 3 mm bleed on all 4 sides of every page.
- Safe Margin: Keep body text, schedule grids, and logos at least 10 mm away from trim edges to prevent trimming clipping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do saddle-stitched booklets require total page counts to be multiples of 4?
Saddle-stitching is constructed by folding parent sheets in half. Each folded sheet produces four numbered pages (front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover, outside back cover). Therefore, all saddle-stitched programmes must have total page counts divisible by 4 (e.g., 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, or 32 pages).
What paper weight is recommended for conference programmes?
For compact event schedules (8 to 16 pages), 157gsm silk art paper throughout ("self-cover") provides a luxurious, substantial handfeel without bulk. For larger booklets (20 to 36 pages), a 250gsm silk cover paired with 128gsm silk interior pages prevents spine ballooning while maintaining smooth page turning.
What is creep compensation and why is it important?
Creep occurs when nested folded sheets cause inner pages to protrude slightly beyond outer pages. Our automated imposition software applies shingling/creep compensation, minutely shifting inner page layouts inward so margins remain visually balanced and content is not clipped during 3-knife face trimming.
