Choose a brochure fold by the order in which the reader needs the information. A cover introduces the subject, an opening panel encourages the next step, and the inside should support the decision. Count panels separately from pages and check the sequence with a folded paper dummy before final export.
This guide focuses on folded brochures rather than the paper choice for a single flat flyer. It helps turn a layout preference into a clear EZ Print enquiry.
Start with the reader’s first question
Write down what someone should understand before opening the brochure. A product overview might lead with its purpose; an event leaflet might lead with the occasion and essential details. Resist placing every message on the cover simply because it is the most visible panel.
Then list the next questions in order. Give each panel a clear role and decide where the action belongs. When information continues over a fold, make that relationship obvious. The reader should not need to unfold and refold the piece repeatedly to reconstruct a sentence.
Build a labelled paper dummy
Fold blank paper into the intended shape and mark the front, back and each internal panel. Open it in the expected direction and number the surfaces in reading order. Photograph both the closed and open dummy so everyone reviewing the artwork is discussing the same construction.
Do not assume all panels have identical usable widths. Ask for the confirmed fold template for the chosen construction and material. Artwork built around guessed positions can put an image, paragraph or QR code in the wrong place once the piece folds.
Give folds room to work
Identify important text and fine detail near every fold. Leave the job-specific clearance recommended for the agreed construction. If a photograph crosses a fold, check whether the subject still reads well when the piece is partly open.
Also consider how the brochure sits when closed. A short internal panel may become a useful reveal, but its visible edge must be intentional. Check whether a heading accidentally peeks out or whether the cover hides the start of the next section. These are sequence decisions as much as layout decisions.
Export the actual outer and inner artwork
Use the confirmed instructions for supplying the two sides and label them clearly. State which side is outside and show the intended top edge. A generic front-and-back filename is ambiguous when the artwork contains several panels.
Adobe’s bleed tutorial explains extending edge artwork beyond the trim. Bleed handles trimming; it does not settle fold positions. Confirm both requirements and inspect the final PDF rather than relying on the view inside the layout application.
Proof content while folded
Print an ordinary checking copy, trim and fold it approximately, and read it as a new customer would. Review headings, paragraph order, contact details and the final call to action. The checking copy is for sequence and content, not a prediction of the finished material or colour.
Discuss brochure printing and request a quote with open size, finished size, fold preference, quantity and a labelled dummy. Confirm the material and fold template before locking the artwork. A well-planned brochure lets the construction reinforce the information instead of forcing the reader to work around it.
