Choose booklet binding around the finished page count, the thickness of the paper and the way people will use the document. A short event programme, a product catalogue and a workbook may share the same finished size but need different constructions. Decide these basics before arranging a cover or moving important text close to the spine.

For a Singapore event team, start with the reader’s task: quickly finding a session, browsing products or writing notes during a workshop. That gives the print brief a practical purpose beyond the appearance of the cover.

Start with pages, not sheets

A page is one side of a leaf. Count blank pages, inside covers and section dividers when describing the finished booklet. State clearly whether your total includes the cover.

Saddle stitching holds folded sheets together through the central fold. Its page structure is based on groups of four; a layout that does not fit that structure needs adjustment. Adhesive binding joins a page block to a cover and calls for a different cover and spine setup. These are distinct constructions, as the official booklet-type guidance explains.

For example, saying “20 pages including the cover” is clearer than “five sheets”. The printer can then check how that count works with the proposed paper and binding.

Match the construction to the reading task

Discuss saddle stitch for a compact programme or short brochure. Discuss adhesive binding when a defined spine and a more substantial page block suit the publication. If people need to write while the document stays open, ask whether a punched binding is appropriate.

Punched bindings use holes along an edge, so they need space that is separate from the trimmed page edge. The paper and binding glossary describes spiral construction and explains why spine dimensions depend on both page count and paper thickness. Confirm the actual construction available for your job rather than treating all punched bindings as interchangeable.

There is no useful universal maximum page count for every saddle-stitched booklet. Ask for an assessment of the complete specification.

Keep information clear of the binding

Mark any photographs or diagrams that cross the centre. A spread may look continuous on a screen while its important detail sits awkwardly at the fold or bound edge. Keep names, captions and small numbers comfortably away from that area, using the margin confirmed for the job.

Do not calculate an adhesive-bound spine from paper weight alone. Request its finished dimension after the interior paper and page count are agreed. Use that dimension for the cover file.

Prepare a booklet brief

Send the finished width and height, orientation, quantity, total pages and whether the cover is separate. Add the preferred interior and cover feel, colour requirements, binding preference and required date.

Include a sample of the most demanding spread: a detailed table, full-page photograph or worksheet. Explain whether readers will write on the pages. Ask how to supply the PDF; avoid rearranging reading pages into printer spreads unless specifically requested.

Check a physical reading sequence

Fold a simple paper dummy and number every side. Use it to check blank pages, section starts and the front and back cover. For a workshop booklet, try writing near the binding edge. For a catalogue, check that the page sequence helps readers compare related products.

Explore booklet printing and request a quote with your page count and intended use. EZ Print can assess the specification before you commit to a final binding layout.
