A printed fridge magnet is a printed face laminated to flexible magnetic sheet and die-cut to shape. EZ Print prints them in Singapore as corporate gifts, quoted from the specification: the shape, the size, the quantity and the artwork. What decides whether a magnet stays useful on a door is the magnetic layer rather than the print, so say what it has to do when you enquire.
What is a printed fridge magnet made of?
A fridge magnet has two parts: a printed white face, laminated over so that colour behaves as it does on paper, and a sheet of flexible magnetic material behind it. The two are bonded and die-cut together to the finished outline. The face carries the message, but the magnetic layer decides how the magnet behaves on a door.
The thickness of that magnetic layer, not the print, is what decides whether the magnet holds anything up. A thin magnet holds itself and very little else, so it suits a phone number or a service reminder and not a stack of paper. If the magnet has to carry something, state it in the enquiry and the construction is confirmed in the quotation.
What are fridge magnets used for?
Fridge magnets are used for anything that should stay in sight in a kitchen or an office: a service reminder, a delivery contact, a save-the-date piece. They are also sold as calendar magnets, magnetic name cards and magnetic postcards. The value is that the printed face sits next to the number someone will want to call.
| Use | What goes on the face | What to settle first |
|---|---|---|
| Service reminder | Business name, the service and one contact number | Whether the shape should show the trade, such as a tool or a vehicle |
| Delivery contact | Name, phone number and ordering instruction | Whether the magnet must hold anything besides itself |
| Save-the-date | Event name and date | The date and the audience, so the piece is not out of date when it arrives |
Because the face is small, keep it to one idea and one contact number rather than a full leaflet.
How are fridge magnets cut to shape?
A fridge magnet is cut with a steel rule bent to the outline, set in a forme and pressed through the sheet. A shaped magnet needs a die made for that outline; a rectangle with rounded corners does not. The die is made once for a new shape and kept, so a repeat of the same shape starts from a tool that already exists.
The shape you get is the shape a rule can be bent to. Rule bends to a radius rather than to a point, so every internal corner arrives with a curve in it, and anything narrower than about 2 mm is fragile in the tool and fragile in the finished piece. Thin spikes and islands either tear off or refuse to strip out of the waste. The die-cut shapes guide covers the tooling in more detail.
| Shape | What it needs | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle with rounded corners | Round-cornering, no die | Text set too close to a rounded corner |
| Shaped outline, such as a logo or a trade symbol | A die made for the outline | Sharp internal corners, which come back curved |
| Repeat of an approved shape | The die already on file | Changing the outline, which makes it a new tool |
How should fridge magnet artwork be prepared?
Supply the cutter as a separate vector path on its own named layer at the finished size, outline all fonts, and bleed the artwork 3 mm past the cut line. Printed faces are supplied as PDF/X-4 or as raster images at 300 dpi at final size, in CMYK. Pantone references can be named where a brand colour has to match.
The bleed matters because the cut never lands on exactly the same line on every piece. Without it, a small shift shows a white edge on a coloured magnet. Keep the phone number and any small type well inside the cut line, and away from the curved internal corners of a shaped outline. For the wider checks on files, the artwork preparation guide lists what to verify before sending.
Worked example: a service reminder magnet for a home-services business
Hypothetical planning example. Actual production timing, paper availability, and logistics are confirmed individually upon artwork and specification review. A home-services business wants a reminder on its customers’ fridges, carrying the business name, the services offered and one phone number. The shape should be simple enough that no fine detail breaks in the die.
- Quantity: 500 magnets, one design.
- Construction: printed white face laminated to flexible magnetic sheet, die-cut to shape.
- Shape: a rounded rectangle, which needs no die; a trade symbol outline would need a die made for it.
- Artwork: print-ready PDF/X-4, fonts outlined, 3 mm bleed, images at 300 dpi at final size, CMYK.
- Cutter path: on its own named layer at the finished size, if the shape is not a plain rectangle.
- Needed by: the date, stated on the enquiry.
Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Express is quoted per job.
Frequently asked questions
What is a printed fridge magnet made of?
A printed face laminated to flexible magnetic sheet and die-cut to shape. The face is printed on white and laminated over, so colour behaves as it does on paper rather than on the magnet.
Can a fridge magnet be cut to any shape?
Any outline a steel cutting rule can be bent to. Internal corners come back with a curve whatever the file says, and detail narrower than about 2 mm is fragile. A rectangle with rounded corners needs no die.
Will a printed fridge magnet hold papers?
Do not assume so. The thickness of the magnetic layer, not the print, decides what it holds, and a thin magnet holds itself and very little else. State what it has to carry in the enquiry.
What artwork file should I send for a fridge magnet?
A vector cutter path on its own named layer at the finished size, with fonts outlined and printed images at 300 dpi at final size. Artwork needs 3 mm bleed, and PDF/X-4 is preferred.
How long does fridge magnet printing take?
Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days for every item, first order or repeat. Express is quoted per job, so put your date in the quotation enquiry.
How do you order fridge magnets from EZ Print?
EZ Print has been trading since 2017 and prints fridge magnets with its other corporate gifts, such as badges, coasters and mouse pads. Each job is quoted from its specification: shape, size, quantity, artwork and the date it is needed. See the corporate gift printing page for the items and their artwork rules, or request a quote with your outline and quantity.
Same-day and urgent printing available. Subject to artwork approval, payment, print type and production availability. Timing confirmed per job.
