Branded merchandise

Corporate gifts, where the object decides the artwork

A logo does not simply go onto a thing. A badge is curved, a tote is woven, a fan is die-cut and a canvas wraps around a frame — and each of those takes a different file, a different colour build and a different amount of time.

  • Standard7–14 working days

Corporate gift printing in Singapore, in one paragraph

EZ Print produces branded corporate gifts in Singapore, and has done since 2017. The regular items are die-cut hand fans on 350–400 gsm board, button badges from 44 mm to 75 mm, cotton and non-woven tote bags by silkscreen or heat transfer, stretched canvas prints, coasters in pulpboard, MDF or cork, dye-sublimated mouse pads, kraft and corrugated cup sleeves, and fridge magnets. Each has its own decoration method and its own constraint: a badge loses about 5 mm of artwork around the curve, a tote printed by silkscreen needs one screen per colour, and a stretched canvas loses 20 to 40 mm to the wrap. Artwork is supplied as vector wherever the decoration is a screen or a die, and at 300 dpi where it is printed. Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days for every item, first order or repeat. Express is quoted per job. EZ Print quotes from the specification and does not publish prices.

What each gift actually needs from the artwork

These are four different products sharing one page because they share one buying decision. The specification below states what each one is, and the artwork section states what each one wants from a file. The badge face is drawn at true physical size.

The material

Boards, cloths and the objects themselves

Two of these gifts are printed on board the caliper table holds, and two are printed onto materials it does not. Both halves are described here, and no figure is invented for the half that has not been measured.

Matt art card0.41 mm · 400 gsm

Also sold as matt coated board, C2S matt. Held at 310, 350 and 400 gsm.

The hand fan board. Stiff enough to move air rather than bend, and it takes a die cleanly.

Under ink
Even solids, no glare, and it prints identically on both faces.
Best for
Hand fans, event paddles, anything die-cut and waved.
Avoid for
Outdoor use over a whole day. Board softens in humidity and in a hand.
On the schedule
Die-cut, then the handle is riveted or slotted in fan by fan after printing.
Gloss art card0.32 mm · 350 gsm

Also sold as gloss coated board, C2S gloss. Held at 260, 310 and 350 gsm.

A reflective fan face for photographic artwork, and the usual board behind a laminated badge face.

Under ink
High chroma. On a badge the colour reads about a tenth stronger than the same file on matt.
Best for
Photographic fans, image-led badges.
Avoid for
Anything handled with wet hands.
On the schedule
Held as a standing stock. The badge face is laminated before it is pressed into the shell.

Cotton canvas tote

Also sold as calico bag, canvas tote, cotton shopper.

A woven cotton bag with stitched handles. The weave is coarse enough that it takes ink as a texture rather than as a flat surface.

Under ink
Silkscreen lays one colour per pass through a screen; heat transfer bonds a printed film to the cloth. Screen ink sinks into the weave, transfer sits on it.
Best for
Conference bags, retail packaging that is reused, anything with a one or two colour identity.
Avoid for
Photographic artwork by silkscreen — a photograph on a woven bag needs a transfer.
On the schedule
One screen per colour, and a first screen has to be made before anything prints.

Non-woven tote

Also sold as PP bag, non-woven shopper, spunbond bag.

A bonded polypropylene fabric rather than a weave. Smoother than cotton, lighter, and cheaper at volume.

Under ink
Takes silkscreen well because the surface is smooth. It will not take a high-temperature transfer without damage.
Best for
Event giveaways and volume promotions.
Avoid for
Heat transfer decoration and anything requiring a premium hand-feel.
On the schedule
Screen only. The material will not take a transfer press, so there is no second route.

Button badge assembly

Also sold as pin badge, tin badge, button pin.

A printed paper face, a clear protective film and a metal shell pressed together over a pin, a magnet or a clip.

Under ink
Printed flat and then curved, so about 5 mm of the outer edge wraps around the shell and is no longer visible.
Best for
Campaigns, events, staff identification, anything handed out in quantity.
Avoid for
Type or a logo near the edge. It wraps out of sight.
On the schedule
Printed, laminated, then pressed shell by shell. The assembly is piece work.

Stretched canvas

Also sold as canvas print, gallery wrap, stretched print.

A printed cotton-polyester canvas stretched over a timber frame and stapled at the back, so the image continues around the sides.

Under ink
Pigment ink on a coated canvas. The weave softens fine detail slightly, which suits a photograph and fights small type.
Best for
Office artwork, reception pieces, presentation gifts.
Avoid for
Text near the edge — 20 to 40 mm of image disappears around the frame.
On the schedule
Printed, then stretched and stapled over a timber frame one piece at a time.

Printed coaster

Also sold as drink coaster, beer mat, MDF coaster, cork-backed coaster.

Three different objects under one word. A pulpboard coaster is thick absorbent board printed and die-cut, used once and thrown away. An MDF coaster is a rigid panel with a printed face and usually a cork back, kept. A cork coaster is the cork itself, printed directly.

Under ink
Pulpboard drinks ink in and dulls it — colours land lighter than the proof and there is no fixing that afterwards. MDF is sublimated, so colour is bright but the panel must be white-coated for it to be.
Best for
Bars and cafés for pulpboard; corporate gifts and hampers for MDF; craft and lifestyle brands for cork.
Avoid for
Expecting one artwork to work across all three. The same file lands as three different colours.
On the schedule
Say which of the three with the enquiry. They are not variants of each other, they are separate routes.

Printed mouse pad

Also sold as mousepad, mouse mat, desk mat, gaming mat.

A rubber base with a fabric top surface bonded to it, printed by dye sublimation and cut to shape — rectangle, round, or a die-cut outline.

Under ink
Sublimation dyes the fabric rather than coating it, so the print does not wear off under a hand and colour is continuous edge to edge. Deep blacks read slightly softer on fabric than on paper.
Best for
Corporate desk gifts, launch merchandise, anything that stays in front of someone all day.
Avoid for
Fine hairlines and small reversed type. The fabric weave thickens both.
On the schedule
Bleed to the cut edge. A sublimated mat has no white border unless the artwork draws one.

Cup sleeve

Also sold as coffee sleeve, cup jacket, java jacket, kraft sleeve.

A die-cut and glued band of corrugated or kraft board that slides over a hot cup. It is a packaging piece, so it is specified by the cup it has to fit before anything else.

Under ink
Kraft is brown, so every colour prints over brown. Corrugated flute shows through a solid as a fine ridge pattern — it is a characteristic, not a defect.
Best for
Cafés, event catering, any takeaway cup that leaves the premises carrying a name.
Avoid for
Photographic artwork and precise brand colour matching on kraft. Neither survives the ground.
On the schedule
State the cup size and, better, send a cup. A sleeve cut to the wrong circumference fits nothing.

Fridge magnet

Also sold as magnets, magnetic sticker, promotional magnet, save-the-date magnet.

A printed face laminated to a flexible magnetic sheet and die-cut to shape. The thickness of the magnetic layer, not the print, is what decides whether it actually holds anything up.

Under ink
Printed on a white face and laminated over, so colour behaves as it does on paper rather than on the magnet.
Best for
Service reminders, delivery contacts, save-the-date pieces, anything that has to survive on a door for a year.
Avoid for
Assuming it will hold a stack of paper. A thin magnet holds itself and very little else.
On the schedule
A shaped magnet needs a die; a rectangle with rounded corners does not.

Every item here is a different manufacturing process wearing the same logo. Say which items are wanted with the enquiry and each is specified separately rather than as one job — they are different manufacturing routes running inside the same standard window. The materials library

A silkscreen screen is tooling in exactly the way a foil block is: made once, kept on file, and skipped on the reorder. It is worth asking for the screens to be kept even if a repeat is not planned.

Decoration methods, and which of them leaves tooling behind

On merchandise the decoration method is the specification. A silkscreen needs a screen per colour and the screens are kept; a heat transfer needs no tooling but has a different colour behaviour; a die-cut fan needs a die. Those three facts explain nearly everything on this page — including which second order is a different job from the first.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Every operation here is quoted inside the standard window. What changes between a first order and a second is the tooling: a die, a block or a screen is made once and then kept on file with your approved artwork, which is why the reorder of a job carrying one is a different job from the first.

Every complaint about branded merchandise is the same complaint: the logo was drawn for a rectangle and the object was not one.

Pairings that work

  • A one or two colour logo silkscreened onto a cotton tote. The ink sinks into the weave, survives washing, and the screens are kept for the reorder.
  • A full-colour badge with the artwork drawn 10 mm larger than the badge. Everything important sits inside the visible face and the excess wraps.
  • A die-cut fan printed both faces, with the sponsor on the reverse. Two impressions for one object, and the reverse is seen every time it is used.
  • A canvas print with the image extended 40 mm on every side. The wrap takes the extension rather than the picture.

Combinations that fail

  • Artwork drawn to the exact badge diameter. About 5 mm around the edge wraps over the shell, so anything near the edge disappears.
  • A photograph silkscreened onto a tote. Screen printing lays flat colour through a mesh; a photograph needs a heat transfer instead.
  • Heat transfer onto a non-woven bag. The material will not take the temperature and it distorts.
  • A canvas with text near the edge. Between 20 and 40 mm of image is taken by the wrap around the frame.

The items, and their working sizes

Each of these is standardised because standardisation is what makes merchandise economical. The sizes below are the ones that run without special tooling.

Hand fan · about 200 mm across
Round or shaped, die-cut from 350–400 gsm board, printed both faces.
Button badge · 44 mm
The small badge. A logo and very little else, because the curve takes 5 mm.
Button badge · 58 mm
The standard. Room for a mark and a short line of text.
Button badge · 75 mm
Large enough for a name and a role. Common for event staff.
Tote bag
Cotton or non-woven, with a print area typically 250 × 250 mm on the front face.
Canvas print · to about 600 × 900 mm
Stretched over a frame, with 20–40 mm wrapping around the sides.

One file per object, and every object has a different edge

The recurring failure on merchandise is a single logo file sent for four different objects. Each item below wants something different at its edge, and the edge is where the artwork is lost.

The file

Format
Vector for silkscreen and die-cut items. PDF/X-4 or 300 dpi raster for printed faces.
Badge artwork
Drawn 10 mm larger than the badge diameter. The outer 5 mm wraps around the shell.
Fan dieline
Supplied or drawn here, with the handle slot marked on the DIELINE layer.
Tote artwork
Vector, one layer per screen colour, at the finished print size.
Canvas artwork
The image extended 40 mm on every side beyond the frame size.
Fonts
Outlined on everything. A screen and a die are both made from outlines.

The colour, and the detail

Colour mode
Named Pantone references for silkscreen; CMYK for printed faces and transfers.
Screen colours
One screen per colour. A three-colour logo is three screens and three passes.
Minimum line weight
1 pt on a silkscreen. A finer line closes up in the mesh.
Type on cloth
10 pt minimum on a woven tote. The weave eats the counters of anything smaller.
Badge type
8 pt minimum, and nothing within 8 mm of the badge edge.
Canvas detail
The weave softens fine detail. Photographs work; 6 pt type does not.

Say which items are wanted before the logo is prepared, and each gets the file it needs — an outlined vector for the screens, a wrapped-out version for the badges, an extended image for the canvas.

Turnaround

Decoration decides the schedule

  • Standard

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

Standard orders. The schedule for specialist finishing is confirmed in your quotation.

  • Express

    Same-day printing available.

Subject to artwork, stock and production capacity confirmation. Timing is agreed for each job.

What sets the date
Assembly, and it is piece work on every item here. A badge is printed flat, laminated, then pressed shell by shell; a fan is die-cut and then has its handle fitted; a canvas is stretched and stapled over a frame one at a time. None of that is a press run, and all of it is quoted inside the standard window.
What a reorder skips
The screen and the die. A silkscreen screen is tooling in exactly the way a foil block is — made once from your outlined artwork and kept on file with it — and a fan die is kept the same way. A second order of the same tote or the same shaped fan has nothing left to make.
If the date is tight
Say which items, the quantity of each, the number of screen colours and whether a die or a screen already exists, and ask for an express quotation. We confirm the specification, production schedule and next steps in the quotation.

Screens and dies are kept on file with the approved artwork, so a repeat of the same merchandise has no tooling left to make. The assembly passes — pressing badges, fitting handles, stretching canvas — are the same either way, because they are done piece by piece.

Every answer here is in the page source at full opacity, open or closed. An answer engine has to be able to read it without executing anything.

Questions asked about corporate gifts

Why does my badge artwork get cut off?

Because a badge is curved. About 5 mm around the outside of the printed face wraps over the shell and is no longer visible from the front. Draw the artwork 10 mm larger than the badge diameter and keep anything important at least 8 mm inside the edge.

What is the difference between silkscreen and heat transfer on a tote bag?

Silkscreen pushes ink through a mesh, one screen and one pass per colour, and the ink sinks into the weave so it survives washing. Heat transfer bonds a printed film to the surface, needs no screens, and handles full-colour and photographic artwork. Screen is better for flat brand colours; transfer is better for images.

Do you keep the screens for a reorder?

Yes. A silkscreen screen is tooling in the same way a foil block is: made once from your outlined artwork and kept on file. The first order carries the screen-making time; a repeat does not.

How much of a canvas print is lost around the frame?

Between 20 and 40 mm on every side, depending on the frame depth. Extend the image 40 mm beyond the finished size and keep any text well inside it, or the wrap takes part of the picture.

What sizes do button badges come in?

44 mm, 58 mm and 75 mm. 58 mm is the standard and has room for a mark and a short line of text. 44 mm realistically holds a logo alone once the 5 mm wrap is taken off.

Can hand fans be printed on both sides?

Yes, and they usually should be. A fan is turned constantly in use, so the reverse gets almost as much attention as the front — it is the natural place for a sponsor, a programme or a phone number.

What is the minimum order for branded merchandise?

Fifty for fans and badges, twenty-five for totes, and one for a canvas print. Below those the tooling and setup dominate the job, and it is usually worth asking whether a different item with existing tooling would serve.
