- What it is
- A rigid display board made entirely of paper — a hexagonal-cell core with a smooth liner bonded to each face. The geometry does the work: a honeycomb resists bending in every direction at once, so a very light board behaves like a much heavier one. It is printed direct or faced with a mounted print, cut to shape, and used flat as a panel or scored and folded into freestanding furniture.
- What it is printed on
A paper honeycomb core between paper liners, printed direct or faced with a mounted print. The environmental benefit is worth stating precisely rather than loosely: the board is paper throughout, so where a facility accepts it, it can go with paper rather than being separated first. That is a property of the material, not a claim about any particular collection route — and a board laminated with plastic film or faced with vinyl is no longer a single-material product at all. It is not a sheet the caliper table holds, so no thickness is quoted here.
- How it feels
- Startlingly light. The first reaction to picking one up is that it must be hollow, and it is; knock it and it answers like a drum rather than a plank. The cut edge shows the cell structure openly, which is either the honest look the design wants or the thing a taped edge is there to hide.
- What it suits
- Exhibition and retail displays that have to be carried in by hand, temporary plinths and shelving, event signage, and any client with a materials policy to answer to. It does not suit outdoor use in any form — it is paper, and rain ends it — and it does not suit a panel that will be knocked along its edges, where the cells crush flat and do not come back.
- Lead time
- Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Counted from approved artwork rather than from the enquiry.
- The common mistake
- Specifying it and then asking for the fixings a plastic board would take. A screw pulls straight through a honeycomb cell, so anything hung, bracketed or bolted needs the fixing designed into the panel — a solid insert, a folded return, or a slot-together joint that carries the load in the geometry. Decide how it stands up before deciding what it looks like.
Print idea
Honeycomb board panels
A paper-cored rigid board: two liners bonded to a honeycomb of paper cells. Stiff for its weight, printable directly, and at the end of the show it belongs in the paper stream rather than the plastic one.

- The printed face.
- The core: Hexagonal cells resist bending in every direction at once — and a screw driven into one has nothing to hold.
- The skin, drawn at its real share of the section — 5 per cent of it, which is why the drawing looks the way it does.
- The fixing. A screw needs something continuous to hold — decide how it stands up before deciding what it looks like.
The specification
Six fields, and the last one is the useful one.
The same six questions are answered for every entry in this section, in the same order, so two objects can be compared without reading two pages of prose. The mistake is stated last and stated plainly, because it is the one that costs a reprint and it is the reason this page is worth sending to a colleague.
Where this sits.
Every entry is indexed three ways, because a buyer arrives knowing the occasion, the object or the material and almost never all three.
