Flyers and leaflets

Flyers, and the four decisions that actually change one

A flyer is judged in the second before it is put down. Size decides whether it is carried, weight decides whether it feels worth reading, and the fold decides whether the offer is on the outside where it can be seen.

Flyer printing in Singapore, in one paragraph

EZ Print prints flyers and leaflets in Singapore, and has done since 2017. Standard sizes are A6 105 × 148 mm, DL 99 × 210 mm, A5 148 × 210 mm and A4 210 × 297 mm, each with 3 mm bleed and a 5 mm safe margin. Stocks run 128 gsm to 250 gsm: gloss art paper for image-led work, matt art card where the flyer has to survive a bag, and uncoated where it will be written on. Printing is 4C/4C or 4C/1C on a digital press for short runs and offset above a few thousand. Finishing includes matt and gloss lamination, folding to DL or Z, perforation and round-cornering. Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days, flat or folded, laminated or not. Express is quoted per job. Minimum run is 50. EZ Print quotes from the specification and does not publish prices.

The specification a flyer is quoted from

Four fields decide the job: size, stock, sides and whether it folds. Everything else is detail. The DL panel below is drawn at true physical size, which is the only honest way to show how little room a folded third actually has.

The material

Stocks held for flyers

A flyer is thrown away or it is kept, and weight is most of that decision. Under 150 gsm it reads as disposable, which is correct for a letterbox drop and wrong for a launch. The edges below are drawn at the measured caliper of the weight named — one millimetre of stock is twenty-two pixels of edge.

Gloss art paper0.13 mm · 157 gsm

Also sold as gloss art, coated paper, C2S gloss text. Held at 128 and 157 gsm.

The workhorse. Thin enough to hand out by the thousand, coated enough that photographs hold their snap.

Under ink
Coating keeps ink on the surface, so chroma stays high and dries fast.
Best for
Letterbox drops, product promotions, F&B menus that are replaced monthly.
Avoid for
Anything written on. Ballpoint skids on the coating.
On the schedule
Held as a standing stock, and it prints without a lamination pass.
Matt art card0.32 mm · 310 gsm

Also sold as matt coated card, C2S matt. Held at 310, 350 and 400 gsm.

A card rather than a paper. Stands up in a rack, survives a bag, and reads as an invitation rather than a leaflet.

Under ink
Solids sit flat. Large blacks want a support build rather than K100 alone.
Best for
Launches, property, clinics, anything that has to look considered.
Avoid for
A folded tri-fold — a card this heavy cracks at the crease unless it is scored first.
On the schedule
Held as a standing stock. Lamination is a separate pass over every sheet.
Uncoated woodfree0.42 mm · 300 gsm

Also sold as uncoated natural, offset paper, natural card. Held at 300, 350 and 400 gsm.

Completely matt, warm in the hand, and it takes a pen without hesitation.

Under ink
Chroma drops roughly 15%. Build for it rather than being surprised by it.
Best for
Workshops, clinics, anything with a form or a booking slot on it.
Avoid for
Full-bleed photography, which goes soft and grey.
On the schedule
Held as a standing stock.

If the flyer is going into a letterbox, choose the lighter sheet and put the money into the run length. If it is being handed to someone at an event, choose the card — it is the only part of the decision they will physically feel. The materials library

Scoring is not folding. Anything over 170 gsm is creased first, or the coating cracks along the fold and shows a white line down the middle of the panel.

Folding, laminating, and the order the material insists on

A flat flyer is one pass. A folded one is two, and a laminated folded one is three, because film has to bond before a sheet can be creased without cracking. That order is fixed by the material rather than by the schedule, which is why it can be published.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Every operation here is quoted inside the standard window. What changes between a first order and a second is the tooling: a die, a block or a screen is made once and then kept on file with your approved artwork, which is why the reorder of a job carrying one is a different job from the first.

A flyer fails for one of three reasons: nobody could read it at arm’s length, it cracked at the fold, or the offer was on the inside.

Pairings that work

  • 157 gsm gloss art paper, 4C/4C, flat A5. The default letterbox drop, and it is the default because it works.
  • DL tri-fold on 157 gsm with the offer on the outside panel. The panel that faces up is the only one certain to be seen at all.
  • 310 gsm matt art card, A5, matt lamination both sides. Survives a conference bag, and still reads as an invitation on the day.
  • Uncoated 300 gsm with a perforated reply slip. Writes cleanly, tears cleanly, and needs no separate form.

Combinations that fail

  • Folding a 350 gsm coated sheet without creasing it first. The coating cracks along the spine and shows a white line down the middle of the fold.
  • Full-bleed dark backgrounds on an unlaminated flyer. Every fingerprint shows, and a stack of them scuffs against itself in transit.
  • Type inside 5 mm of the trim. Guillotine tolerance across a lift of two thousand sheets is around a millimetre, so the margin looks uneven from flyer to flyer.
  • A QR code smaller than 20 mm on a folded panel. It scans on a screen and fails in a hand at arm’s length, which is the only place it will ever be used.

Sizes, and what each one is actually for

Every size below trims from the same parent sheet, so the choice is about the reader rather than about the cost of the paper. What changes is how much of it survives a pocket.

A6 · 105 × 148 mm
Postcard scale. Cheap to hand out, and it fits a pocket without folding.
DL · 99 × 210 mm
One third of A4. The standard rack and envelope size in Singapore, and the shape of a folded tri-fold panel.
A5 · 148 × 210 mm
The default. Big enough for a headline and an image, small enough to carry.
A4 · 210 × 297 mm
A poster you can hand over. Also the flat size of a DL tri-fold.
148 × 148 mm square
Trims from the same sheet, so it costs nothing in time. It will not fit a DL rack.
A4 folded to DL
Six printable panels. Creased before folding above 170 gsm — creasing is its own pass.

What a flyer file needs before it goes on press

Most flyer reprints come from three things: text that fell inside the trim tolerance, an image scaled up from a website, and a fold that was drawn in the wrong place. All three are visible in the file, which is why the file gets read first.

The file

Format
PDF/X-4 preferred. Illustrator and packaged InDesign accepted.
Artboard
Trim plus 3 mm bleed on all four sides — an A5 flyer is drawn at 154 × 216 mm.
Safe margin
5 mm in from the trim, and 7 mm on a folded panel.
Double-sided
Two single pages, front first. Not spreads.
Folds
Marked on a separate FOLD layer as dashed lines, never printed. A DL tri-fold has one panel 1 mm narrower so it tucks in.
Placed images
300 dpi at final size, 200 dpi as the floor on A4.

The colour, and the detail

Colour mode
CMYK. RGB converts, but the conversion is not yours to choose.
Rich black
C60 M40 Y40 K100 for large solids, total ink 240%.
Small text
K100 only, 7 pt minimum on coated stock.
Reverse type
7 pt minimum, and heavier than a hairline weight.
QR codes
20 mm minimum on the printed piece, with 4 mm of quiet zone round it.
Registration
Keep rules and borders 4 mm off the trim so the margin reads even.

Ask for the DL and A5 templates and the artboards, bleed and fold guides come back set up as Illustrator and PDF files.

Turnaround

What the material insists on, and what a reorder skips

  • Standard

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

Standard orders. The schedule for specialist finishing is confirmed in your quotation.

  • Express

    Same-day printing available.

Subject to artwork, stock and production capacity confirmation. Timing is agreed for each job.

What sets the date
Passes, not quantity. A flat unlaminated flyer is one pass; lamination is a second, because the film has to bond; folding is a third, because anything over 170 gsm is creased before it is folded. All of it is quoted inside the standard window.
What a reorder skips
The die for a shaped flyer, the perforation setup and the approved file stay on record, so a repeat starts from the tooling rather than from the first proof.
If the date is tight
Send the specification and the date and ask for an express quotation. We confirm the specification, production schedule and next steps in the quotation.

No cutoff is published and no express time is either. What a tight date is worth depends on the fold, the stock and what is already on the floor that week — so ask with the specification and you get a straight answer rather than a promise that slips.

Every answer here is in the page source at full opacity, open or closed. An answer engine has to be able to read it without executing anything.

Questions asked about flyers

What is the standard flyer size in Singapore?

A5 at 148 × 210 mm is the most common, followed by DL at 99 × 210 mm for anything that goes into a rack or an envelope. A6 at 105 × 148 mm is used for letterbox drops and A4 at 210 × 297 mm where the flyer doubles as a small poster. All four take 3 mm of bleed.

What gsm is best for flyers?

128–157 gsm gloss art paper is the standard for a hand-out or a letterbox drop. 310 gsm matt art card is the choice where the flyer has to survive a conference bag or stand up in a rack, and 300 gsm uncoated is right where someone will write on it. Below 128 gsm the sheet feels like a photocopy.

How long does flyer printing take in Singapore?

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days, and it is the same window flat or folded, laminated or not. The material still sets the order of the work — lamination is a separate pass because the film has to bond, and anything over 170 gsm is creased before it is folded — but that order happens inside the window rather than on top of it. Where the date is tighter, ask for an express quotation with the specification and the order is prepared against it.

How much bleed does a flyer need?

3 mm on all four sides, with a 5 mm safe margin inside the trim. On a folded panel keep 7 mm clear of the fold, because a folded sheet shifts slightly as it is creased.

What is the difference between a tri-fold and a Z fold?

Both put three panels on one side of the sheet. A tri-fold tucks one panel inside the other two, so that panel is cut about a millimetre narrower. A Z fold folds in opposite directions like a concertina, so all three panels are the same width and the piece opens flat.

Why did my folded flyers crack along the fold?

Because the sheet was folded without being creased first. Above about 170 gsm the coating on the outside of the fold is under enough tension to split, and it shows as a white line. Creasing crushes the fibre along the line before the fold, which prevents it.

Do you print flyers for letterbox distribution?

The flyers are printed to the specification; distribution is arranged separately. If the drop has a size or weight limit, put it on the specification and the stock is chosen against it rather than against the look.

What is the minimum quantity for flyer printing?

50. Below a few hundred the setup dominates the job, so short runs go on a digital press; above roughly two thousand offset usually becomes the sensible route and the specification does not change.
