Anti-slip floor decals

A printed graphic under a textured laminate made to be walked on. The print is the easy half; the laminate and the state of the floor decide whether it survives its first week.

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

What anti-slip floor decals is

A graphic printed on self-adhesive vinyl, over-laminated with a gritted anti-slip film and usually contour cut to a shape — a circle, an arrow, a footprint, a queue marker. It goes straight onto a hard floor and is then walked on, mopped and trolleyed over until somebody lifts it again.

Self-adhesive vinyl with a floor-grade adhesive, under an anti-slip laminate. The laminate is the specification that actually matters: the print beneath it is never touched, and the grip and the clarity trade against each other — the more aggressive the texture, the more it dulls the image under it. Sealed concrete, timber and stone each want a different adhesive. None of it is a sheet the caliper table holds.

  1. The laminate. It takes the wear, not the print.
  2. The ink.
  3. The face film.
  4. The adhesive.
  5. The release liner, peeled away at the moment of application.
  6. The a hard floor. The film is on the near face, so nothing protects the print but the laminate over it.
Film, in section, on its surface Section through a 5-layer film applied to the near face of a hard floor: the ink on the face. Layer order and count, not layer thickness.

The specification

Six fields, and the last one is the useful one.

The same six questions are answered for every entry in this section, in the same order, so two objects can be compared without reading two pages of prose. The mistake is stated last and stated plainly, because it is the one that costs a reprint and it is the reason this page is worth sending to a colleague.

How it feels
Deliberately gritty, like a fine emery under a palm and audible under a shoe before it is felt. The edge is the part worth checking: a well-laid decal has an edge a fingernail cannot get under, and that is precisely what stops it being kicked up on the first busy morning.
What it suits
Retail and supermarket aisles, exhibition floors, lift lobbies, roadshow footprints and wayfinding underfoot in an office. It does not suit an unsealed, dusty or newly laid floor — fresh screed and fresh sealer both have to cure before anything is stuck to them — and it does not suit an outdoor pavement in this climate, where standing water and heat work the edges loose.
Lead time
Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Installation, where it applies, is scheduled on top of that.
The common mistake
Choosing the shape before looking at the traffic. A large decal on a polished floor with a trolley route across it will lift at its leading edge whatever the adhesive, so the fix is a smaller shape, a rounded outline, and an orientation that puts no straight edge square across the flow of people. Corners lift first; circles last longest.

Every entry is indexed three ways, because a buyer arrives knowing the occasion, the object or the material and almost never all three.
