Surface graphics

Surface graphics, and the surface they have to come off

A wall graphic is a film with an adhesive, and the adhesive is chosen for the wall rather than for the graphic. Almost every complaint — it lifted, it bubbled, it took the paint with it — was decided before anything was printed.

Large format graphics printing in Singapore, in one paragraph

EZ Print prints large format surface graphics in Singapore, and has done since 2017. The work divides by surface: walls, glass, floors, vehicles and hoarding, and each takes a different film with a different adhesive and a different laminate. Wall graphics use a removable film on smooth painted surfaces and a textured-wall film where the surface is rough. Glass takes frosted film for privacy, one-way vision film where a view out must be kept, and clear or white film for ordinary window graphics. Floor graphics need an anti-slip laminate, because a printed film on a floor without one is a hazard rather than a graphic. Vehicle work uses a conformable cast film that can be stretched into a recess without lifting afterwards. Installation is scheduled separately and depends on site access rather than on production. EZ Print quotes from the specification and does not publish prices.

The specification a surface graphic is quoted from

The surface, the size, how long it has to stay, and how it has to come off. That last one is the question nobody asks and everybody eventually needs answered — a graphic on a leased office wall is a different specification from the same graphic on a hoarding.

A wall graphic is not drawn here at true size, and reducing one would defeat the point of drawing it. The estate draws at 1 mm = 22 px because at that scale a reader can hold a real object against the screen — and a four-metre mural has no true-size view. What is worth stating exactly is the part a fitter works to: a 50 mm overlap at every panel join, a 5 mm gap from a wall edge or a skirting, and the fact that a removable film is rated for a period rather than forever. Those are figures rather than pictures, and they are below.

The material

Films, and the surfaces they are chosen against

Every film here is a face, an adhesive and a liner, and it is the middle layer that decides success. Nothing on this page is a sheet from the caliper table, so nothing here carries a caliper — the films are described by what they do rather than measured.

Removable wall film

Also sold as wall vinyl, removable wall graphic film, wall decal material.

A printable film with an adhesive formulated to release cleanly from a sound painted surface within a stated period.

Under ink
Prints well and takes a matt laminate, which is what stops a wall graphic looking like a sticker.
Best for
Office walls, retail interiors, anything on a leased surface.
Avoid for
Freshly painted walls. Paint needs to cure fully, or the film takes it off when it is removed.
On the schedule
Printed, laminated and cut to panel, then fitted on site.

Textured-surface wall film

Also sold as textured wall film, rough-surface graphic film, brick-and-render film.

A more conformable film with a stronger, tackier adhesive that reaches into a texture instead of bridging it.

Under ink
Same printing behaviour; the difference is entirely in how it lies down.
Best for
Rendered walls, brick, lightly textured plaster, anywhere ordinary film would bridge and lift.
Avoid for
Delicate or flaking surfaces. A stronger adhesive removes more when it comes off.
On the schedule
Printed and laminated, then worked into the texture by hand on site.

Frosted glass film

Also sold as etched glass film, privacy film, manifestation film.

A translucent film that diffuses light and obscures a view without blocking daylight. It also serves as glass manifestation, making a full-height pane visible.

Under ink
Printed or cut. A printed frosted film can carry a pattern; a cut one is the film itself as a shape.
Best for
Meeting rooms, glass partitions, shopfront lower panels.
Avoid for
Assuming it is opaque at night. Lit from inside, a frosted panel silhouettes.
On the schedule
Printed or cut to shape, then applied to clean dry glass.

One-way vision film

Also sold as perforated window film, contra vision, see-through graphic film.

A perforated film with an image on the outside and a black face inside, so the graphic reads from outside while the view out is kept.

Under ink
The image is broken by the perforation, so fine detail and small type do not survive it.
Best for
Shopfront glazing, vehicle rear windows, anywhere the view out matters.
Avoid for
Interior mounting, and small type. It is an exterior film and a bold-image material.
On the schedule
Printed, then applied to the outside face of the glass.

Anti-slip floor film

Also sold as floor graphic film, anti-slip laminate, floor decal material.

A printed film with a textured protective laminate rated for foot traffic. The laminate is the product; the film underneath is ordinary.

Under ink
The anti-slip laminate slightly softens the print, which is a fair trade for not being a hazard.
Best for
Retail aisles, wayfinding, queue management on hard indoor floors.
Avoid for
Carpet, and any floor without the laminate. A printed film on a floor is slippery.
On the schedule
Printed, then the anti-slip laminate is applied before anything is cut.

Conformable cast vehicle film

Also sold as cast vinyl, vehicle wrap film, conformable wrap.

A cast rather than calendered film, which means it has no built-in tension and can be stretched into a recess without pulling back out of it later.

Under ink
Printed and then laminated. The laminate is what survives washing, sunlight and road grit.
Best for
Full and part vehicle wraps, curved and recessed panels.
Avoid for
Cheaper calendered film on a curved panel. It lifts out of recesses within weeks.
On the schedule
Printed, laminated, cut to panel, then fitted to the vehicle by hand.

Name the surface precisely — smooth painted plasterboard, rendered concrete, powder-coated metal, tempered glass, sealed concrete floor — and the film comes back chosen against it. A photograph of the wall is worth more than a paragraph describing it.The materials library

Fitting is not included in a print lead time. It is scheduled against site access — an office out of hours, a shopfront before it opens, a vehicle off the road — and that is a different constraint from the press.

Laminates, cutting and what fitting adds

Almost every surface graphic is printed, laminated and then cut, and the laminate is not decoration: it is what makes a floor graphic safe to walk on, a vehicle wrap survive a wash, and a wall graphic stop looking like a sticker.

Surface graphic finishing: what each operation needs, and whether its cut file is kept for the reorder
FinishToolingWhat the reorder pays for
Matt or gloss laminateProtects the print and sets the reflectance. Matt for walls, gloss for vehiclesNoneNothing to make, so nothing to remake.
Anti-slip laminateTextured, rated for foot traffic. Mandatory on any floor graphicNoneNothing to make, so nothing to remake.
Contour cuttingCut to a closed vector path rather than to a rectangleMade onceKept on file with your approved artwork. The reorder runs from it.
Panel splittingA large graphic divided into fitting panels with a 50 mm overlap at each joinNoneNothing to make, so nothing to remake.
Weeding and application tapeCut vinyl lettering weeded and taped so it transfers as one pieceNoneNothing to make, so nothing to remake.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Every operation here is quoted inside the standard window. What changes between a first order and a second is the tooling: a die, a block or a screen is made once and then kept on file with your approved artwork, which is why the reorder of a job carrying one is a different job from the first.

Nobody ever asks how the graphic comes off, and it is the question that decides the adhesive, the surface it leaves behind and whether there is an argument at the end of the lease.

Pairings that work

  • Removable film with a matt laminate on smooth painted plasterboard. It goes on flat, reads as a wall rather than a sticker, and comes off cleanly.
  • Frosted film at eye height on a glass partition. It gives privacy, makes the glass visible, and needs no printing at all.
  • One-way vision film on a shopfront with a bold image and no small type. The graphic reads outside and the view out is kept.
  • Anti-slip laminated floor film in a retail aisle, contour cut. Safe underfoot and it survives a mop.

Combinations that fail

  • Any film on a freshly painted wall. Paint has to cure fully first, or removal takes the paint with it — and that is a repair rather than a reprint.
  • Ordinary wall film on a rendered or brick surface. It bridges the texture instead of reaching into it, and lifts at every high point within days.
  • A floor graphic without an anti-slip laminate. It is a hazard, and no design decision makes that acceptable.
  • Calendered film stretched into a vehicle recess. The film wants to return to flat and it lifts out of the recess within weeks.
  • Small type on one-way vision film. The perforation breaks it up and it is unreadable from any distance.

Panels, joins and edges

A large graphic is fitted as panels, because roll widths and human arms both have limits. How it is split is a fitting decision and it should be made before the artwork is finished, not after.

Panel width · up to about 1300 mm
A practical width for one person to apply without creasing.
Overlap · 50 mm
At every vertical join. It hides the seam and allows for a wall that is not straight.
Edge gap · 5 mm
From a skirting, a corner or a frame. A film taken hard into a corner lifts there first.
Window film
Cut to the pane with a 3 mm gap inside the frame, so the film does not sit on the seal.
Floor graphics
Contour cut with rounded corners. A sharp corner on a floor graphic is what a shoe catches.
Vehicle panels
Split by body panel rather than by size, so joins fall on shut lines.

Build at a stated scale and split where the wall lets you

Large-format artwork is almost always supplied at a fraction of final size, and that is fine as long as the fraction is stated. What is not fine is a file whose panel splits were decided by the designer without reference to the wall they are going onto.

The file

Format
PDF/X-4 at final size, or at a stated fraction with the scale in the file name.
Resolution
150 dpi at a metre, 100 dpi at three metres, at final size.
Panel splits
Marked on a separate layer, with 50 mm overlap at each join. Splits are agreed against the site.
CUT layer
Contour cuts as closed vector paths in a named spot colour, never printed.
Safe margin
30 mm from any panel edge, and clear of doors, sockets and switches.
Site information
A photograph and dimensions of the actual surface. It answers more than a description does.

The colour, and the detail

Colour mode
CMYK, with Pantone references for any brand colour spanning multiple panels.
Colour across joins
Avoid a flat corporate colour running across a panel join. A gradient hides a join; a flat solid shows every one.
Rich black
A four-colour black. K100 alone reads as dark grey at any distance over a metre.
Minimum type
25 mm cap height at two metres. On one-way vision film, larger still.
Floor legibility
High contrast only. A floor graphic is read at an angle, in poor light, while walking.
Vehicle colour
Match to the vehicle body colour where the wrap is partial. Send the paint code.

Send a photograph of the surface with its dimensions and say how long the graphic has to stay. Those three things decide the film, the adhesive, the laminate and the panel splits — and they cost nothing to supply.

Turnaround

Production is a window; installation is site access

  • Standard

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

Standard orders. The schedule for specialist finishing is confirmed in your quotation.

  • Express

    Same-day printing available.

Subject to artwork, stock and production capacity confirmation. Timing is agreed for each job.

What sets the date
Every surface graphic is printed, laminated and then cut, and the laminate has to bond before the material can be handled. A vehicle wrap adds panelling and hand fitting. All of it is quoted inside the standard window.
What a reorder skips
The panel splits and the contour cut file. Once a wall, a shopfront or a vehicle has been measured and split into panels that fit, a second graphic for the same surface reprints straight to those figures.
If the date is tight
Send a photograph of the surface, its dimensions and how long the graphic has to stay, and ask for an express quotation. We confirm the specification, production schedule and next steps in the quotation.

Installation is scheduled separately and against the site rather than against production — an office out of hours, a shopfront before opening, a vehicle off the road for a day. Say the access window with the enquiry and it is planned around rather than discovered.

Every answer here is in the page source at full opacity, open or closed. An answer engine has to be able to read it without executing anything.

Questions asked about surface graphics

Will a wall graphic damage my paint?

Not if the wall is sound, fully cured and the right film is used. Removable film releases cleanly from a properly cured painted surface. The common failure is a freshly painted wall — paint needs weeks to cure, and film applied too early takes it off on removal.

Can you put a graphic on a textured or brick wall?

Yes, with a textured-surface film. It is more conformable and has a tackier adhesive that reaches into the texture rather than bridging it. Ordinary wall film on brick lifts at every high point within days.

What is one-way vision film?

A perforated film printed on the outside with a black face inside, so the graphic reads from outside while people inside keep their view out. The perforation breaks up fine detail, so it needs a bold image and no small type.

Do floor graphics need a special laminate?

Yes, an anti-slip one, and it is not optional. A printed film on a floor without a textured laminate is slippery, particularly when wet. The laminate is the actual product; the printed film underneath is ordinary.

How long do vehicle wraps last?

It depends on the film, the laminate and how the vehicle is kept — sun, washing and road grit all matter. What decides it more than anything is using a conformable cast film rather than a cheaper calendered one, because calendered film lifts out of recesses and curves.

How is a large graphic joined?

In vertical panels with a 50 mm overlap at each join. The overlap hides the seam and allows for a wall that is not perfectly straight. Avoid running a flat corporate colour across a join — a gradient or a texture hides it, a flat solid shows every one.

Do you install?

Installation is arranged and scheduled separately from production, because it depends on site access rather than on the press — an office out of hours, a shopfront before it opens, a vehicle off the road. Say the access window with the enquiry so it is planned rather than discovered.
