Print idea

Wall murals

A wall covered edge to edge with a printed graphic, hung in panels with matched joins. The decision that matters is not the image but what the wall is made of and how the mural has to come off it.

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

What wall murals is

A large graphic printed in panels and applied across a wall — self-adhesive film for a smooth, sound surface, or a paste-the-wall non-woven wallcovering for a bigger area or a wall that has to be handed back. The panels are butt-joined or slightly overlapped, and the joins are planned into the artwork so they fall in quiet parts of the image rather than through a face or a logo.

Either self-adhesive wall film, which needs a smooth, fully cured and properly sealed surface, or a printable non-woven wallcovering hung with paste, which forgives a slightly textured wall and strips off dry at the end. Removability is the whole argument in a leased office: film pulls paint off a poorly prepared wall, while a non-woven covering is made to come away in whole lengths. Neither is a sheet the caliper table holds.

  1. The laminate. It takes the wear, not the print.
  2. The ink.
  3. The face film.
  4. The adhesive.
  5. The release liner, peeled away at the moment of application.
  6. The a wall. The film is on the near face, so nothing protects the print but the laminate over it.
Film, in section, on its surface Section through a 5-layer film applied to the near face of a wall: the ink on the face. Layer order and count, not layer thickness.

The specification

Six fields, and the last one is the useful one.

The same six questions are answered for every entry in this section, in the same order, so two objects can be compared without reading two pages of prose. The mistake is stated last and stated plainly, because it is the one that costs a reprint and it is the reason this page is worth sending to a colleague.

What it is

What it is printed on

Either self-adhesive wall film, which needs a smooth, fully cured and properly sealed surface, or a printable non-woven wallcovering hung with paste, which forgives a slightly textured wall and strips off dry at the end. Removability is the whole argument in a leased office: film pulls paint off a poorly prepared wall, while a non-woven covering is made to come away in whole lengths. Neither is a sheet the caliper table holds.

How it feels
Self-adhesive film is smooth and cool, a fraction proud of the plaster, with an edge findable at the skirting. A non-woven mural is closer to cloth — matt, faintly textured and dead to the touch — so it reads as part of the wall rather than as something applied to it, and it does not throw the sheen a film does under a downlight.
What it suits
Office fit-outs and breakout walls, retail interiors, restaurant and café walls, and reception areas that have to say what the company does before anybody speaks. It does not suit a freshly plastered or freshly painted wall — new paint keeps outgassing and film will not key to it — and it does not suit heavily textured masonry, where paint and projection are the only things that actually work.
Lead time
Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Installation, where it applies, is scheduled on top of that.
The common mistake
Designing the mural and then measuring the wall. A room is never the rectangle on the drawing: there are sockets, a thermostat, a door architrave, a skirting that is not level and a ceiling line that runs out along the length of the wall. Survey it first, mark every obstruction on the artwork, and keep faces, type and logos away from the joins and the switch plates — those are exactly where the eye goes.

Where this sits.

Every entry is indexed three ways, because a buyer arrives knowing the occasion, the object or the material and almost never all three.
