Construction hoarding graphics

Printed panels fixed to the timber hoarding around a site, working as a fence, an advertisement and a piece of the street for as long as the works run.

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days.

What construction hoarding graphics is

A run of printed panels mechanically fixed to the plywood hoarding enclosing a construction or fit-out site, usually as a repeating sequence with a few one-off panels for the entrance, the site notice and the gate. It is read by somebody walking past, so it is designed as a long horizontal rhythm rather than as a single poster made larger.

Rigid panels — foam PVC or aluminium composite for a long programme, fluted polypropylene for a short one — or printed vinyl applied directly to a primed hoarding face. Panel work survives being knocked and can be unscrewed and replaced a panel at a time; applied vinyl gives an unbroken image but has to be cut off the plywood at the end. Exterior work here means relentless UV, driving rain and washdown, so a UV-stable print under a laminate is not optional. None of these is a sheet the caliper table holds.

  1. The printed face.
  2. The core: Cross-laminated veneers, erected in fixed modules — so the panel joints are set by the hoarding and not by the artwork.
  3. The skin, drawn at its real share of the section — 12 per cent of it, which is why the drawing looks the way it does.
  4. The batten. The machined edge is tucked behind it rather than left where people pass.
  5. The run, drawn as 5 modules of 1220 mm. A pedestrian sees one of them at a time.
Rigid panel, at the core Section through hoarding plywood — a stack of cross-laminated veneers. The depth is structure and is not to scale. A run of 6000 mm is drawn above it as 5 fixed modules.

The specification

Six fields, and the last one is the useful one.

The same six questions are answered for every entry in this section, in the same order, so two objects can be compared without reading two pages of prose. The mistake is stated last and stated plainly, because it is the one that costs a reprint and it is the reason this page is worth sending to a colleague.

What it is printed on

Rigid panels — foam PVC or aluminium composite for a long programme, fluted polypropylene for a short one — or printed vinyl applied directly to a primed hoarding face. Panel work survives being knocked and can be unscrewed and replaced a panel at a time; applied vinyl gives an unbroken image but has to be cut off the plywood at the end. How it feels
Hard, flat, and warm to the hand by late morning. Foam PVC deadens the sound when it is knocked; composite panel rings. Both carry a machined edge sharp enough to matter, which is why hoarding panels are normally fitted with the cut edge tucked behind a batten rather than left in the open where people pass.
What it suits
Retail fit-outs behind a hoarding, development sites, and any project whose neighbours have to live beside it for the duration. It does not suit a site where the panels will be repositioned constantly, and it does not suit artwork that depends on being seen whole — a pedestrian sees a metre and a half of it at a time, at walking pace, from an oblique angle.
Lead time
Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Installation, where it applies, is scheduled on top of that.
The common mistake
Treating the hoarding as your own wall. The main contractor owns the structure, the developer usually controls what may be shown on it, and the approval the hoarding was granted under may carry conditions about advertising. Fixings, panel joints and access gates are set by the hoarding rather than by the artwork, so get the elevation, mark where the posts and the gates actually fall, and lay the panels out around them.

Where this sits.

Every entry is indexed three ways, because a buyer arrives knowing the occasion, the object or the material and almost never all three.
