Prepare packaging artwork on the structural dieline confirmed for your job. A dieline identifies the shape that will be cut, folded and assembled; a photograph of a finished box cannot provide all of that information. Agree the structure and dimensions before spending time polishing the artwork.

For a Singapore brand preparing a product box, sleeve or event gift pack, bring together the physical product, its inserts and the way someone will open it. The package needs to fit and assemble as intended as well as display the design.

Confirm what the dimensions describe

List the product dimensions and the space needed for any tray, padding or additional items. State whether your proposed measurements describe the internal space or the outside of the assembled package. Do not assume those measurements are interchangeable.

Ask for the agreed structural template and its revision reference. If the product or board changes later, check whether the same template still applies. Keep one approved version with the artwork so an older dieline cannot slip into the final handover.

A flat diagram should show the relevant dimensions clearly, not rely on the artwork application’s zoom level.

Recognise cuts, creases and glue areas

Cut lines describe the edges that will be separated. Crease lines guide folds. Glue areas identify where the structure joins. These have different jobs, which is why packaging processing guidance records them separately from artwork and other finishing instructions.

Keep the structural information on an identifiable layer. Ask how it should be supplied in the production file. Do not turn every coloured line into ordinary printed artwork or assume that a generic line colour always means the same operation.

Ask which areas must remain clear of printing or finishing, especially where a flap joins another panel. Follow the confirmed template rather than adding a decorative finish over a structural area by default.

Map the assembled panels

Label the front, back, sides, top and bottom while the template is flat. Then fold a simple dummy to check their orientation. A panel that faces the right way on screen may be upside down after assembly.

Put the main product name where it will be seen when the pack is displayed. Check the opening sequence: a logo or instruction can be hidden by a tuck flap. Keep essential text away from cuts and folds using the job’s confirmed safe areas.

For sleeves, check how the artwork wraps around the object and where the join lands. Treat that join as part of the layout.

Add the specified bleed

Bleed extends the background artwork beyond a cut edge so trimming does not expose an unintended unprinted border. Official bleed guidance explains the principle and recommends asking the print provider for the amount required by the job.

Use the dieline’s specified bleed and safe areas. Bleed is not a substitute for a safe margin around text. Keep structural guides available for checking while confirming how they should appear in the supplied production file.

Review fit before approving artwork

Check a physical dummy with the actual product where practical. Review closure, opening, orientation and the position of important information. A digital mockup helps communicate appearance, but cannot confirm every fit or assembly detail.

Start with packaging printing or discuss a separate product label if that suits the pack. Request a quote with the product dimensions, quantity, proposed structure, required date and artwork status. Confirm the structural file before preparing the final production artwork.
