Transparent sticker printing puts your artwork on clear vinyl, so the glass, bottle or window behind the label shows through and the label itself seems to disappear. Because printing ink is transparent, any colour that must stay solid on clear film needs a white underbase printed behind it; without one, the colour looks washed out. Specify the white layer, the cut path and the adhesive, and the clear label prints as intended.

How does transparent sticker printing work on glass and clear packaging?

A transparent sticker is a clear vinyl face, an adhesive and a liner. The clear face is the same film as white vinyl without the white pigment, so whatever is behind it shows through. That is what makes a label on a glass bottle disappear into the product, leaving only the printed artwork visible on the surface.

Transparent sticker is the term it is ordered under locally; it is also sold as clear label or clear label film, and it is the same face under every name. It suits glass and clear plastic containers, window seals and anything meant to look unlabelled. It does not suit dark surfaces unless a white underbase is specified, because the dark surface reads straight through the ink.

Every sticker is three layers, and only one of them is seen. The face carries the design. The adhesive decides whether the sticker stays on, comes off cleanly, or leaves a mark. The liner decides whether it is peeled by hand from a sheet or applied by machine from a roll.

Layer or option What it is What to decide
Face Clear vinyl, the film without white pigment Whether the surface behind should show through
White underbase A white layer printed behind colour on clear film Which colours must stay opaque
Adhesive Permanent, removable or low-tack The surface it goes onto and how long it stays
Laminate Matt, gloss or soft-touch film over the print Handling, moisture, and whether it is written on
Cut Kiss-cut on the liner, die-cut through, or contour-cut Sheet, roll or single stickers
Lead time Standard 7–14 working days Express is quoted per job

Why does colour on clear vinyl need a white underbase?

Colour on clear vinyl needs a white underbase because printing ink is transparent and mixes with whatever is behind it. On white paper the paper is the white; on clear film there is none. Without a white layer, everything behind the label shows through the ink and the colour looks washed out, most visibly on a dark or coloured surface.

The white underbase is printed behind colour on clear film so the colour stays opaque. It is a separate pass, planned at the artwork stage rather than after proofing. You choose where it goes, and that choice is the design:

  • White behind all the artwork. Every printed element reads as solid colour, and the unprinted film around it stays clear.
  • White behind selected elements only. The logo and the text sit on white and stay solid, while other areas print with no white behind them and let the surface show through the colour.
  • No white at all. The artwork reads as tinted colour on glass. This works on a light, clear surface and fails on a dark one.

The same rule applies to other faces that have no white in them. Kraft sticker stock prints every colour over brown, and white does not print at all unless a white underbase is specified. A metallic foil face shows metal through translucent ink, so anything that must stay flat and opaque needs a white underbase first. Clear film is simply the case where the “background” is whatever the label is stuck to.

Which transparent sticker options can you specify?

You specify a transparent sticker by face, white ink, print side, laminate and cut. EZ Print’s print catalogue lists transparent stickers with and without white ink, a transparent OPP label sticker with gloss laminate, transparent backlit stickers, and large-format outdoor transparent label stickers, so the right product depends on where the label goes.

Product type Where it fits
Transparent Stickers Clear labels where the artwork can read as tinted colour
Transparent Stickers with White Ink Clear labels where logos and text must stay solid
Transparent OPP label sticker + Gloss Laminate Clear product labels with a gloss film over the print
Transparent Backlit Stickers Clear graphics designed to be lit from behind
Outdoor Transparent Label Stickers (Large Format) Larger clear labels for outdoor surfaces

Transparent stickers with white ink are listed with direct, reverse and double-sided printing options and a blockout option. A direct print is read from the face of the sticker. A reverse print is printed so it reads through the clear film, which is how a sticker on the inside of a glass door is read from outside. A double-sided print carries an image on each side, and a blockout layer stops one side showing through the other.

For window graphics on a shopfront or partition, the same principle applies at larger sizes: printed film, or clear film with a white underbase.

How do you set up white ink and cut-path artwork for clear stickers?

A clear sticker file has three artworks in it: what is printed in colour, what is printed in white, and where it is cut. Each must be a vector on its own named layer. Supply the file as PDF/X-4 or Illustrator with the cut path intact, and keep the white and the cut on separate layers so neither prints by mistake.

  1. Colour layer. Build the artwork in CMYK. A brand colour repeated across every batch is worth a Pantone reference.
  2. WHITE layer. Supply the white underbase as a vector on a layer named WHITE, under any colour that must stay opaque. Draw it only where you want white; anything not on this layer prints with the surface showing through.
  3. CUT layer. Draw a single closed path on a layer named CUT, in a spot colour, never printed. The cut path drives a blade, so it cannot be a drawn outline, a rasterised edge, or implied by the shape of the design.
  4. Bleed and safe margin. Extend the artwork 2 mm outside the cut path on every edge, and keep text and logos 3 mm inside it. Cutting tolerance on a small label is around half a millimetre.
  5. Internal corners. Radius every internal corner to at least 2 mm. A blade cannot turn a sharper corner without tearing the face.
  6. Small text. Set small text in K100 at 5 pt minimum. On clear film, put white behind it so it reads against the product.

Supply one label per artboard, not a sheet of them. The step-and-repeat is worked out against the die. For more on preparing print files generally, see how to prepare artwork for print.

Decision checklist: when should a clear sticker have a white underbase?

Specify a white underbase whenever a colour must stay solid regardless of what is behind the label, and especially on a dark, coloured or busy surface. Leave it out only where tinted, see-through colour is the intended look on a light, clear surface. Run through these checks before the artwork is final, because adding white after proofing changes the file.

  • The surface. Name it with the enquiry: clear glass, amber glass, clear plastic, a painted wall, a window. The adhesive is chosen against it, and a dark surface needs white behind every colour.
  • Which elements must stay solid. Mark the logo, text and any brand colour that must match a reference. Those go on the WHITE layer.
  • Moisture and handling. A bottle that goes into a fridge or gets handled wet needs a vinyl or synthetic face with a laminate over it.
  • Written on or not. A matt laminate takes a marker pen; gloss film does not.
  • Supply format. Sheets for hand application, or a roll on a 40 mm or 76 mm core with a stated unwind direction for an applicator.
  • The date. Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Express is quoted per job.

What mistakes should you avoid when ordering transparent stickers?

The most common transparent sticker mistake is printing colour on clear film with no white underbase, so the surface shows through and the artwork looks washed out. The others are a wrong adhesive for the surface, a paper face in a wet place, and a cut path drawn on the artwork layer. Each one is a reprint rather than a repair.

  1. No white underbase. Everything behind the label shows through the ink. Decide the WHITE layer before proofing, not after.
  2. A permanent adhesive on a temporary job. A permanent adhesive on a promotion can remove paint or leave a residue outline worse than the sticker. Use removable adhesive where the sticker must come off.
  3. Paper where it gets wet. Paper wicks water at the cut edge, so the print lifts and the corners curl. Use a vinyl or synthetic face with a laminate.
  4. A sharp internal corner. A corner under about 2 mm radius tears when the label is peeled.
  5. Artwork stopping at the cut line. Without 2 mm of bleed, a small shift in cutting shows an unprinted edge.

Worked example: specifying clear bottle labels with a selective white underbase

Hypothetical planning example. Actual production timing, paper availability, and logistics are confirmed individually upon artwork and specification review. A drinks brand wants a clear label on a glass bottle that goes into a chiller, with a solid logo and ingredient text but the drink itself visible through the rest of the label. Here is how the specification is built.

  • Quantity and size: 2,000 product labels, 60 × 40 mm, with rounded corners at a 3 mm radius.
  • Face and adhesive: Clear vinyl face, permanent adhesive, because the label stays on for the life of the bottle.
  • White ink: A white underbase behind the logo and the ingredient text only, supplied on a WHITE layer; the rest of the label prints with no white so the drink shows through.
  • Laminate: A laminate over the print, because the bottle is handled wet from the chiller.
  • Cut and supply: Kiss-cut on a roll, 76 mm core, unwind outside edge first, for an applicator.
  • File: Print-ready PDF with the cut path on its own layer, 2 mm bleed outside the cut and 3 mm safe margin inside it.
  • Timing: Standard 7–14 working days; the white underbase pass and the die are planned inside that window. The die or cut path is then kept on file with the approved artwork, so a reorder does not wait for tooling.

Frequently asked questions about transparent sticker printing in Singapore

Why does a transparent sticker need white ink?

Printing ink is transparent, so on clear vinyl whatever is behind the label shows through the colour. A white underbase printed behind any colour that must stay opaque keeps it solid; without it the colour looks washed out.

Are transparent stickers waterproof?

A vinyl or synthetic face with a laminate over it survives water, refrigeration and handling, because the material does not absorb moisture at the cut edge. A paper label does, which is why paper stickers curl and lift in a fridge.

How do I supply white ink artwork for a clear sticker?

Supply the white underbase as its own vector on a layer named WHITE, under every colour that must stay opaque, and the cut path as a single closed vector on a layer named CUT in a spot colour that is never printed.

What bleed and safe margin does a clear sticker need?

2 mm of artwork outside the cut path on every edge and a 3 mm safe margin inside it. Internal corners on a shaped sticker need at least a 2 mm radius, because a blade cannot turn a sharper corner without tearing the face.

How long does transparent sticker printing take?

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days, on a die already held or a die cut for the first time, and the white underbase pass is planned inside that window. Express is quoted per job, so put your required date in the enquiry.
