A wall sticker, decal or mural is a printed film with an adhesive, and the adhesive is chosen for the wall rather than for the graphic: a removable film for smooth painted walls, a textured-surface film where the wall is rough. Large murals are printed in vertical panels with a 50 mm overlap at each join and finished with a matt laminate, so the graphic reads as part of the wall rather than as a sticker. Settle the surface and how the graphic has to come off before anything is designed.

What is the difference between a wall sticker, a decal and a mural?

All three are self-adhesive film on a wall; what differs is the shape and the scale. A mural covers a wall edge to edge in panels with matched joins. A decal or wall sticker is cut to the shape of the artwork, so there is no rectangle and the wall itself is the background. Lettering and logos can be cut from solid-colour film with no print at all.

Type What it is Typical use
Wall mural A large graphic printed in panels and applied across a wall, with the joins planned into the artwork Office fit-outs, breakout walls, reception areas, retail and café interiors
Contour-cut decal Printed and laminated film, then cut to a closed vector path around the image A logo, an illustration or a shape with an image inside it
Cut vinyl lettering Solid-colour film cut through the face and adhesive, weeded and transferred with application tape Office lettering, door numbers, glass logos and small decals beside a larger graphic

The cut versions follow a vector path, so the artwork has to be a vector. A logo supplied as a flattened image has to be redrawn before anything can be cut, and a redrawn logo is a logo that is now subtly wrong. Very fine detail in cut vinyl is also a problem: a letterform with a loop too fine to weed comes back closed up. For small stickers printed on sheets rather than applied to a wall, the die-cut versus kiss-cut sticker guide covers the cutting choices.

Which wall sticker film suits which wall surface?

Smooth painted walls take a removable wall film. Rendered walls, brick and lightly textured plaster take a textured-surface film, which is more conformable and has a stronger, tackier adhesive that reaches into the texture instead of bridging it. Ordinary wall film on a rough surface bridges the texture and lifts at every high point, so naming the surface precisely matters more than the design.

Wall surface Film What to watch
Smooth painted plasterboard, sound and fully cured Removable wall film The usual office wall; take a matt laminate over the print.
Rendered wall, brick, lightly textured plaster Textured-surface wall film Worked into the texture by hand on site.
Freshly painted wall Wait Paint needs to cure fully, or the film takes it off when it is removed.
Delicate or flaking surface Avoid the stronger adhesive A stronger adhesive removes more when it comes off.
Heavily textured masonry Not suited to a mural film Paint and projection are the only things that actually work there.

Describe the wall exactly with the enquiry, for example smooth painted plasterboard or rendered concrete, and the film comes back chosen against it. A photograph of the wall with its dimensions answers more than a paragraph describing it. Recording the surface, the obstructions and the conditions of use is covered step by step in the window, wall and floor graphic site brief, so it is not repeated here.

Will a wall sticker damage the paint when it comes off?

Not if the wall is sound, fully cured and the right film is used. Removable wall film carries an adhesive formulated to release cleanly from a sound painted surface within a stated period; it is rated for a period rather than forever. The common failure is a freshly painted wall, where film applied too early takes the paint with it on removal.

How the graphic comes off is the question that decides the adhesive, the surface it leaves behind and whether there is an argument at the end of a lease. Stickers in general come with three adhesives, chosen for the surface and the intended life: permanent, removable and low-tack. Removable suits promotions and anything on a rented or painted surface, and low-tack suits a surface that must be left unmarked. The mistake to avoid is a permanent adhesive on a temporary promotion: it removes the paint or leaves a residue outline that is worse than the sticker.

For a large area, or a wall that has to be handed back, a printable non-woven wallcovering hung with paste is the other route. It forgives a slightly textured wall and is made to come away in whole lengths, where film can pull paint off a poorly prepared wall. Say how long the graphic has to stay and how it has to come off with the enquiry, and the material is specified against that.

Why are wall graphics laminated?

A wall graphic is printed, laminated and then cut, and the laminate is not decoration. It protects the print and sets the reflectance: matt for walls, gloss for vehicles. Removable wall film takes a matt laminate well, and that laminate is what stops a wall graphic looking like a sticker, so it reads as part of the wall instead.

The pairing that works on an office wall is removable film with a matt laminate on smooth painted plasterboard. It goes on flat, reads as a wall rather than a sticker, and comes off cleanly. Cut vinyl lettering is the exception to the laminate rule when it is cut from solid-colour film: the colour is in the film itself, so there is no print in it at all and no ink to fade.

For a long-term decal or one on a curve, the film grade matters as well as the laminate. A cast film is the one for a curve or a long dwell; a calendered film is flatter, shorter-lived and the sensible choice for a campaign. That choice is made from how long the graphic has to stay, which is why the enquiry needs it.

How is a large wall mural split into panels?

A large graphic is fitted as panels, because roll widths and human arms both have limits. Panels run up to about 1300 mm wide, a practical width for one person to apply without creasing, with a 50 mm overlap at every vertical join and a 5 mm gap from a skirting, a corner or a frame. The split is decided before the artwork is finished.

Fitting figure Value Why
Panel width Up to about 1300 mm A practical width for one person to apply without creasing.
Overlap 50 mm at every vertical join It hides the seam and allows for a wall that is not straight.
Edge gap 5 mm from a skirting, a corner or a frame A film taken hard into a corner lifts there first.

Plan the joins into the image rather than finding them on the wall. Joins should fall in quiet parts of the image rather than through a face or a logo, and a flat corporate colour running across a join shows every one, where a gradient or a texture hides it. Keep faces, type and logos away from the joins and the switch plates too, because those are exactly where the eye goes. A room is never the rectangle on the drawing: survey it for sockets, a thermostat, a door architrave, a skirting that is not level and a ceiling line that runs out, and mark every obstruction on the artwork.

How should wall sticker and mural artwork be supplied?

Supply a PDF/X-4 at final size, or at a stated fraction with the scale in the file name. Resolution is set by viewing distance: 150 dpi at a metre, 100 dpi at three metres, measured at final size. Mark the panel splits on a separate layer with the 50 mm overlaps, and put any contour cut on its own layer as a closed vector path.

Setting Requirement
File PDF/X-4 at final size, or at a stated fraction with the scale in the file name
Resolution 150 dpi at a metre, 100 dpi at three metres, at final size
Panel splits On a separate layer, with 50 mm overlap at each join, agreed against the site
CUT layer Contour cuts as closed vector paths in a named spot colour, never printed
Safe margin 30 mm from any panel edge, and clear of doors, sockets and switches
Colour CMYK, with Pantone references for any brand colour spanning multiple panels
Black A four-colour black; K100 alone reads as dark grey at any distance over a metre
Type size 25 mm cap height at two metres

Large-format artwork is almost always supplied at a fraction of final size, and that is fine as long as the fraction is stated. What causes trouble is a file whose panel splits were decided by the designer without reference to the wall it is going onto. Send a photograph of the surface with its dimensions and say how long the graphic has to stay: those three things decide the film, the adhesive, the laminate and the panel splits.

Worked example: an office wall mural on painted plasterboard

Hypothetical planning example. Actual production timing, paper availability, and logistics are confirmed individually upon artwork and specification review. An organisation wants a branded mural across one wall of a meeting room. The wall is smooth painted plasterboard that has been painted long enough to be fully cured, the office is leased, and the mural has to come off cleanly when the lease ends.

  • Graphic: wall mural, 4200 × 2400 mm finished, in vertical panels.
  • Film: removable wall film with a matt laminate.
  • Surface: smooth painted plasterboard, with removal planned for a stated date.
  • Panels: split against the site, each up to about 1300 mm wide, with a 50 mm overlap at every join.
  • Edges: a 5 mm gap from the side walls, the ceiling line and the skirting.
  • Artwork: a print-ready PDF at quarter size with the scale stated in the file name, built for 100 dpi at final size, panel splits on a separate layer.
  • Layout: no flat brand colour across a join; the logo and type kept 30 mm from any panel edge and clear of the switch plate.
  • Needed by: the date stated on the enquiry, with the access window for fitting.

Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days. Installation is arranged and scheduled separately from production, because it depends on site access, such as an office out of hours, rather than on the press. Stating the access window with the enquiry means it is planned around rather than discovered.

Frequently asked questions

Will a wall sticker damage my paint?

Not if the wall is sound, fully cured and the right film is used. Removable film releases cleanly from a properly cured painted surface within its stated period. The common failure is a freshly painted wall, where film applied before the paint has cured takes it off on removal.

Can wall stickers go on a textured or brick wall?

Yes, with a textured-surface film. It is more conformable and has a tackier adhesive that reaches into the texture rather than bridging it. Ordinary wall film on brick lifts at every high point, and heavily textured masonry is not suited to a mural film at all.

How is a large wall mural joined?

In vertical panels with a 50 mm overlap at each join. The overlap hides the seam and allows for a wall that is not perfectly straight. Avoid running a flat corporate colour across a join, because a gradient or a texture hides a join and a flat solid shows every one.

What resolution should wall mural artwork be?

150 dpi at a metre and 100 dpi at three metres, measured at final size. The artwork can be supplied at a stated fraction of final size, such as quarter size, as long as the scale is written in the file name.

Is installation included with a wall graphic?

Installation is arranged and scheduled separately from production, because it depends on site access rather than on the press. State the access window with the enquiry so the fitting is planned rather than discovered.

How do you order wall stickers and murals from EZ Print?

EZ Print prints large format surface graphics in Singapore and has been trading since 2017. Every wall graphic is quoted from its specification: the surface, the size, how long it has to stay and how it has to come off. Artwork is checked before production, and installation is scheduled separately against site access. Standard turnaround is 7–14 working days; express is quoted per job.

The films, laminates and fitting figures are set out on the large format printing page, and smaller adhesive pieces are on the sticker and label printing page. Send a photograph of the wall, its dimensions and the removal date, and request a quote.

Same-day and urgent printing available. Subject to artwork approval, payment, print type and production availability. Timing confirmed per job.
