Pull-up, roll-up and X-stand banners

Pull-up banners, and the part the cassette swallows

The printed drop is longer than the visible graphic, and the difference is not a rounding error. The cassette takes a strip at the bottom and the rail takes one at the top, and a logo placed in either is a logo nobody at the event will see.

Pull-up banner printing in Singapore, in one paragraph

EZ Print prints pull-up banners — also called roll-up banners — and X-stand banners in Singapore, and has done since 2017. Standard widths are 850 mm and 1000 mm at about 2000 mm visible height; on a pull-up the printed drop is longer than that, because the cassette and the top rail each take a strip. A pull-up rolls into a spring-loaded aluminium cassette for transport; an X-stand holds a flat printed sheet by four corner eyelets on a crossed tensioner, so it has no cassette and no cassette allowance. Bases run from an economy cassette to a wide premium base for an uneven floor. The bottom 60 mm is inside the cassette, and the lowest 100 mm of visible graphic is behind whoever stands at the stand. Replacement graphics fit an existing cassette where the width matches. An X-stand is lighter and faster to set up; a cassette is steadier in a draught. EZ Print quotes from the specification and does not publish prices.

The specification a pull-up banner is quoted from

Width, base type, and whether the cassette already exists. The last one is worth asking: a replacement graphic for a stand you already own is a smaller job than a new banner, and the width is the only thing that has to match.

A pull-up banner is two metres tall and it is not drawn here at true size, because a two-metre object has no true-size view on a screen. What would matter at true size is the bottom of the drop, and that is stated exactly instead: about 60 mm disappears into the cassette, about 30 mm goes into the top rail, and the lowest 100 mm of what remains visible is behind the person standing at the stand. Those three figures are the whole argument, and a picture reduced to fit would carry none of them.

100mm

The bottom band of a pull-up banner that nobody reads. Sixty of it is inside the cassette and the rest is behind the person standing at the stand.

Widths
850 mm and 1000 mm are standard. Other widths exist but the cassette has to match exactly.
Visible height
About 2000 mm. The printed drop is longer, because the cassette and rail each take a strip.
Cassette allowance
About 60 mm at the bottom, inside the cassette and never visible.
Rail allowance
About 30 mm at the top, taken into the rail.
Dead zone
The lowest 100 mm of visible graphic is behind whoever is standing at the stand.
Material
A stay-flat banner material that resists curling when rolled and unrolled repeatedly.
Bases
Standard economy cassette, or a wide premium base that is heavier and more stable.
X-stand
A different frame for the same job: an X-shaped tensioner holding a printed sheet by four eyelets, not a cassette. Lighter, cheaper and quicker to set up; less stable in a draught, and the graphic is eyeletted at the corners rather than rolled, so it is specified to the frame size with no cassette allowance at all.
Turnaround
Standard is 7–14 working days including fitting the graphic to the cassette. Express is quoted per job.

The material

The material and the hardware

A pull-up banner is a printed drop and a spring-loaded aluminium cassette, and it is the hardware people actually judge. A cheap base wobbles, and a wobbling stand undoes whatever the graphic was trying to say. Neither the material nor the hardware is a sheet from the caliper table, so neither carries a caliper here.

Stay-flat banner material

Also sold as roll-up film, anti-curl banner media, stay-flat PVC.

A printable material built to be rolled and unrolled repeatedly without taking a permanent curl or curling at the edges.

Under ink
Prints densely with a matt surface, which is deliberate — a gloss banner under exhibition lighting is a mirror.
Best for
Every pull-up banner. It is the reason a good roll-up hangs flat and a cheap one curls at the sides.
Avoid for
Ordinary banner vinyl, which curls at the edges after a few rolls.
On the schedule
Printed, trimmed to the drop, then bonded into the cassette by hand.

Standard cassette base

Also sold as economy roll-up stand, standard retractable base.

An aluminium cassette holding the spring mechanism, with a narrow footprint and a telescopic support pole.

Under ink
Not printed. The end caps are usually silver or black.
Best for
Short campaigns, indoor use, anywhere the stand is not the focus.
Avoid for
Uneven or carpeted floors, and anywhere windy. A narrow base is easy to knock over.
On the schedule
Fitted with the graphic.

Premium wide base

Also sold as deluxe roll-up, wide-base retractable, heavy-duty pull-up.

A wider and heavier cassette with a broader footprint and a sturdier support pole, and a smoother retraction mechanism.

Under ink
Not printed. Available in silver or black, and it holds a replacement graphic later.
Best for
Repeated use, exhibitions, reception areas, anywhere the stand is seen close up.
Avoid for
Nothing much. It costs more and it is what most people should choose.
On the schedule
Fitted with the graphic.

Double-sided cassette

Also sold as double-sided roll-up, back-to-back retractable stand.

A cassette taking two graphics that retract independently, so the banner reads from both directions in an aisle.

Under ink
Two separate printed drops, which can carry different artwork.
Best for
Aisles and thoroughfares where people approach from both directions.
Avoid for
Against a wall, where the second graphic is money spent on nothing.
On the schedule
Two separate drops, each fitted and tested for retraction.

If a cassette already exists, say the width and it can usually take a replacement graphic. It is the cheapest way to refresh a stand and it is what the hardware is designed for.The materials library

A replacement graphic for an existing cassette is a real option and a cheap one. The only thing that has to match is the width.

Fitting the graphic, and what the hardware adds

There is no finishing on the graphic itself beyond trimming it to the drop. The work is in fitting it into the cassette and testing the retraction, which is a hand operation on every stand — and it is the operation that decides whether the banner hangs flat on the fourth build.

Scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Every operation here is quoted inside the standard window. What changes between a first order and a second is the tooling: a die, a block or a screen is made once and then kept on file with your approved artwork, which is why the reorder of a job carrying one is a different job from the first.

The bottom hundred millimetres of a pull-up banner is the most expensive dead space in exhibition print, because everybody designs into it and nobody ever sees it.

Pairings that work

  • A single message in the top third of the drop, read from four metres. That is where a pull-up banner is actually looked at.
  • A premium wide base for anything used more than once. It stands on an uneven floor and it survives being transported.
  • A replacement graphic in an existing cassette. The hardware is the durable part and the message is the part that changes.
  • A matt material rather than gloss. Exhibition lighting is directional and a gloss drop reflects it straight back.

Combinations that fail

  • A logo in the bottom 100 mm. Sixty millimetres is inside the cassette and the rest is behind whoever is standing at the stand.
  • Body copy at reading size. A pull-up is read from three to five metres away — anything smaller than about 25 mm cap height is decoration.
  • A cheap narrow base on a carpeted or uneven floor. It leans, and a leaning banner reads as neglect rather than as economy.
  • A graphic ordered for a cassette of a different width. The width has to match exactly; the height has some tolerance and the width has none.

Widths, heights and what they mean

Pull-up banners are standardised around two widths, and that standardisation is what makes replacement graphics possible. The heights below are the visible area rather than the printed drop.

850 × 2000 mm
The standard. Fits a narrow aisle and a standard carry bag.
1000 × 2000 mm
The wider standard. More presence in an open space, and the same hardware family.
Printed drop
Longer than the visible height: about 60 mm into the cassette and about 30 mm into the top rail.
Dead zone · bottom 100 mm
Visible but blocked by anyone standing at the stand. Keep it empty.
Reading zone · top third
Where a banner is actually read from four metres. Put the message here.
Double-sided
Two drops in one cassette, retracting independently, for an aisle position.

Design the top third and leave the bottom alone

A pull-up banner file is simple, and almost every failure is positional rather than technical. The message goes high, the dead zone stays empty, and the resolution is set by the distance it is read from.

The file

Format
PDF/X-4 at final size — the full printed drop, not the visible height.
Drop length
The visible height plus the cassette and rail allowances. Ask for the exact drop for the stand being used.
Dead zone
Nothing important in the bottom 100 mm of the visible area.
Safe margin
30 mm from each side. The rail grips the edges slightly.
Resolution
100 dpi at final size is sufficient at three to five metres.
Fonts
Outlined.

The colour, and the detail

Colour mode
CMYK, with Pantone references where a set of banners must match each other.
Rich black
A four-colour black. K100 alone reads as grey at four metres under exhibition lighting.
Minimum type
25 mm cap height for anything that has to be read at three metres. Headlines much larger.
Matching across a set
Print a set of banners as one job. Run to run, a flat brand colour can drift visibly.
Contrast
Exhibition halls are bright and busy. Value contrast survives that; subtle tonal work does not.
Edges
Avoid a fine border. It shows any slight variation in how the drop hangs in the rail.

Say which stand is being used, or send the cassette width, and the exact printed drop comes back as a figure — so the artboard is right before the artwork is finished rather than after.

Turnaround

The print is trivial; the fitting is a hand operation

  • Express

    Same-day printing available.

What sets the date
Assembly. Every drop is trimmed, bonded into a cassette and tested for retraction by hand, and a double-sided stand is two of those in one base. A set that has to match is printed as one run. All of it is quoted inside the standard window.
What a reorder skips
The cassette. The hardware is the durable half and the graphic is the half that changes — say the width of a stand you already own and a replacement drop is fitted to it, which is exactly what the mechanism was designed for.
If the date is tight
Send the width, the base type and whether the cassette already exists, and ask for an express quotation. We confirm the specification, production schedule and next steps in the quotation.

Where several banners have to match each other, they are printed as one run. A set printed on two different days can show a visible difference in a large flat brand colour.

Questions asked about pull-up banners

What size is a standard pull-up banner?

850 × 2000 mm and 1000 × 2000 mm are the two standards, measured as the visible area. The printed drop is longer than 2000 mm because roughly 60 mm disappears into the cassette and 30 mm goes into the top rail.

How much of the banner is hidden?

About 60 mm at the bottom is inside the cassette and never visible, and about 30 mm at the top is taken into the rail. On top of that, the lowest 100 mm of visible graphic is behind whoever is standing at the stand, so it should be left empty.

What is the difference between a standard and a premium base?

Footprint and weight. A standard cassette is narrow and light, which is fine indoors on a flat floor for a short campaign. A premium wide base is heavier with a broader footprint and a smoother mechanism, so it stands securely on carpet or an uneven floor and survives repeated transport.

What is the difference between a pull-up banner and an X-stand?

The frame, and everything follows from it. A pull-up holds the graphic in a spring-loaded cassette it rolls back into, so the printed drop must be longer than the visible height and the bottom strip is never seen. An X-stand holds a flat sheet by four corner eyelets on a crossed tensioner: nothing is swallowed, the artwork is made to the frame size, and the eyelet positions have to be clear of anything that matters. A cassette is heavier and steadier; an X-stand is lighter, cheaper and faster to put up, and it moves in a draught.

Can I replace the graphic in a banner stand I already own?

Usually yes, and it is the cheapest way to refresh a stand. The only thing that has to match exactly is the width — send that with the enquiry and a replacement drop is fitted to the existing cassette.

What resolution should a pull-up banner file be?

100 dpi at final size is sufficient. A pull-up is read from three to five metres, so a 300 dpi file at two metres tall is three times the detail anybody can see and is unnecessarily large to handle.

How small can text be on a pull-up banner?

About 25 mm cap height for anything that must be read at three metres, and considerably larger for a headline. Body copy at reading size on a pull-up is decoration — if there is a paragraph to deliver, it belongs on a leaflet at the stand.

Can a pull-up banner be double-sided?

Yes, with a double-sided cassette that holds two drops retracting independently, so the two faces can carry different artwork. It is worth it in an aisle where people approach from both directions, and wasted against a wall.
